2011-365-31: Say Anything

In this game the main player each round reads a question from the card, and the other players have to suggest something they think the main player would pick as the most likely answer (out of what's given). Sometimes this ends up with hilarious results (this question was "gifts you wouldn't accept from a stranger" - one of these things is not like the otherrrr!). Oh, and pardon the whacked out orientation of this pic, but I took it upside down so this was the best it could really look.

Well, that's 1 month down & 11 to go in the 365 Project! Any of you silent readers got suggestions for photos to come?

Egyptian Museum

I went to Cairo in September 2008, for a brief visit with my Mum in the leadup to my birthday. There's a lot of amazing stuff to see there, naturally, but I was especially excited about visiting the Egyptian Museum (the entrace to which is pictured above - taking photos inside is forbidden). It was a strange experience - after visiting so many museums all over the world that hold a great deal of Egypt's cultural heritage, to see it here in its home was almost unreal. The museum itself is a lovely old building, and there is some great stuff on display; they aren't exactly rolling in funds so some of it isn't as flash as it could be, but in some ways that doesn't matter - it's the objects and the history that really speaks at this museum.

My museum keyword news alert has been on fire the last few days in Google Reader after what's happened at the museum - looting and damage. There is a little information here and Boing Boing has a little amongst all their coverage too. The Classical Archaeology tumblr's got a lot of info on their first couple of pages as well. I feel like with all that's going on I still need to think this part of events through and get this out. Much like when the Iraq war was at its height and museums were being looted and cultural heritage destroyed, i'm a big mix of confused and upset. No matter how angry you are, no matter how much you want change, no matter who you are, there is nothing to be gained from destroying cultural material. It's especially upsetting seeing looters (and perhaps others, depending on what you're reading) take advantage of this situation to ruin their own historic treasures. It really doesn't compute for me. I trust that there are enough sensible folks in Cairo who will be able to prevent any more damage, and it's seriously terrible it's gone this far. I hope that things can get safe in general for everyone in Cairo too, as soon as possible.

2011-365-30: King Monkey

As a young'un, I was rather fond of a TV series called Monkey (also known as Monkey Magic). As a young adult I rediscovered the show when it was in re-runs (on Recovery) - when I started to get to know the BFF he lent me a copy of Journey to the West, which the TV series was an adaptation of. My love blossomed for the tale of Monkey and to this day i'm still as enamoured by the stories and characters as I ever was. (Still waiting for one of my favourite authors to release a book on the subject, too!) This afternoon I saw this awesome illustration pop up in one of my various internet feeding troughs and flailed just a little bit. SO GORGEOUS. I set to and made it my phone's wallpaper so I can stare at it all the time and remember the awesomeness of Monkey. Oh Monkey. I think it's about time for a re-read of Journey to the West!

2011-365-29: Faces

Tonight I went for some drinks. And then I went for some more, accidental drinks! It was pretty good. At the second bar, the tables were plastered with these faces - as nobody approached us while we were sipping to take our portraits, I can only assume these photos are snaffled from Facebook, from stupid people who get drunk a lot and leave their profiles unlocked.

Friday's Frivolous Links Dump & another Friday Five

First of all, I want to pop a few links up re: the Egypt situation. Can you believe they switched off the internet? Switched it OFF. Fucking hell. Reddit post outlining the situation; Boing Boing's master list of posts & info; is the Egyptian Museum under threat? I really hope things can calm down there, it's worrying to say the least.

Now, to the frivolous.. I had a LOT stowed away for this week.

Comics
- China Miéville’s 'London Intrustion' is a gorgeous exercise in minimalism, line art, London storytelling. It's ongoing, so keep reading!
- "Cure For Social Anxiety" - Aaah, polite unease, my old nemesis. Magical Courage Elixirs for all!
- A bit of Australian childhood storytelling nostalgia - Wombat Tales. This and Snugglepot & Cuddlepie were favourites of mine.
- Two-fisted Poe - this Poe needs to meet Robert Downey Jnr's Sherlock and there will be fun times.
- Victorian Batman and Superman are AMAAAAZING - so nice to see an old-style costume re-jig that isn't just steampunk.
- Cave-Man vs Pac-man - Team Society League get the story straight.
- A Softer World reminds us that people ruin friendships.

Art, Photos & Design
- The (Tetris) Invasion has begun. Help us all.
- Remember that Twin Peaks art exhibit I really want to go to? Check out this piece from it - Scott C's awesome cubist Laura Palmer.
- There's going to be an upcoming exhibit at the British Museum of Australian drawings and prints - I am understandably vexed that I no longer work there and could just pop in at lunch. Bother.
- Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright got understandably excited about how awesome this tattoo is. Lots of other great geek flash on this blog too.
- Terrific wood-cut map of Toronto coasters. These would make a cool souvenir for me..

Friday Five - Unrelated

1.What’s your favorite kind of cracker? I'm not picky. Anything salty. Mmm salty.
2.What part of your residence gets the best natural lighting? The living room is pretty well-lit, which is a pain when watching telly sometimes.

3.What song have you frequently listened to lately? I haven't had ANY tracks i've repeat-listened in the last week. Last song I obsessed over was the Bluetones' 'Sleazy Bed Track'.

4.What could you use a little break from? Sharehousing. I'm getting selfish.
5.What’s going on in your town this weekend? I'm pretty sure there's some Chinese New Year stuff going on. My weekend will consist of lazing. Aaah.

8 Tracks mixtape - Dreamy Night Time Mix

I can't remember where I saw it surface in the last day or two, but I was reminded about the existence of 8 Tracks and thought it'd be a good thing to make a mix and post here on a regular basis. Seeing as i'm having a nice quiet night at home and heading for a nice old lady bed time, have this one: Dreamy Night Time Mix - includes Great Lake Swimmers, Stars, 2 Litre Dolby, the Dirty Three, Black Heart Procession, Morphine & Do Make Say Think. Have a dreamy evening. (And if it's not evening for you, then give it a whirl when it is!)

2011-365-26: Self Portrait

I figured I should get around to doing my first self-portrait for this project; I hope they get easier from now on. This took me a billionty times to get a shot that didn't make me want to cry, and I still used B&W to hide the worst of it. Fingers crossed the 365 Project will help me improve my portraiture, self or otherwise!
